Job Description


We are currently seeking a dynamic PEER SPECIALIST to join our team at our office in Woburn, MA.  The PEER SPECIALIST assists members in connecting to treatment services and works with individuals receiving services from network providers with the goal of teaching/improving self-advocacy skills. A Peer Specialist also helps providers develop and/or enhance their understanding of both person-centered care and the support network available to members.  A Peer Specialist functions as part of an interdisciplinary team designed to meet the needs of members.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Support members to access and engage in treatment services.

    • Telephone and/or face-to-face support to members and families to offer care coordination, support and information.Members may need help navigating the system, locating traditional and non-traditional supports, and learning about self-advocacy skills.

    • Assist with the enhancement of member treatment by identifying resources, access to care, identifying barriers to care and gaps in service.

    • Work closely with the Care Management staff to coordinate services as well as community-based systems of care.

    • Identify self-help groups and/or networks of adult members and families.

  • Educate and support providers and Beacon team members to understand both person-centered care and the support network available to members.

  • Conduct and/or assist in the coordination of training for Beacon staff as well as community agencies, providers, members, families, and others across the state.

  • Work closely with provider relations and clinical staff to identify area resources, both traditional and non-traditional, that are available to members.

  • Collaborate with our health plans, as necessary, to support development and training of wellness principles and surrounding local resources.

  • Train and support the clinical department to ensure adequate knowledge and understanding of wellness and recovery principles.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:

Education:  The position requires a minimum of a High School diploma or High School equivalency diploma required.  Associates degree preferred.

  • Certified Peer Support Specialist, or willing to work towards certification within 6 months from date of hire.

 Relevant Work Experience:

  • Preferably two to three years’ experience serving as an advocate to families or individuals within the behavioral health service delivery system.

  • Knowledge of community outreach and education preferred.

  • Personal experience living with a behavioral health condition.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

    Organization & Planning: Self-motivated, able to prioritize multiple issues, solid organizational skills, ability to track projects/tasks and follow through as needed.

  • Able to identify opportunities for improvements and implement creative, innovative solutions. Able to work collaboratively with internal staff and external providers/clients
